A DIY Dr. Seuss Cat in the Hat Birthday
Some of our favorite books when my little brother was young were the Dr. Seuss books. We started collecting them for him and would read them over and over again aloud. My mom even recorded them on tape for him to listen to at nap time. I loved these moments when they were so little back in the early 2000s.
These books were the inspiration behind my little sister learning to read at only three years old. She would sit in her high chair and ‘read’ the stacks of books from memory. When she was turning four, she requested a ‘Cat in the Hat’ birthday – all her own idea! My mom and siblings and I were so excited and had so much fun making her birthday special for her. Follow along for some ideas for you to put on a special Cat-in-the-Hat birthday for a little one in your life!

My older sister and I made a four layered cake like the Cat in the Hat’s hat! At the time, we were on a strict diet, so I made cream cheese frosting and colored it with strawberry jam. I also wrapped the base with a strawberry fruit leather. I wish we had more pictures of this cake, but I do know that it was delicious! Here is a similar recipe from seussville.com!

My mom sewed a Cat in the Hat costume complete with a hat she made out of red and white felt. She also sewed a giant red bow just like the character. My sister loved playing dress up with princess dresses, tutus, and animal mask, so this was fun for her! Here is a similar idea.
Little sister also had to find four Cat-in-the-Hat drawings that we had made and hid around the house for her along with a gift. She loved this treasure hunt! Another idea is to play ‘pin the hat on the cat’ by making a simple poster and hats like this one from catchmyparty.com.
We found this fun game, perfect for young children called “I Can Do That” that gives them fun activities to do like balancing, hopping, twirling, and so much more. It was a hit for her and my little brothers! Too bad it is hard to find now but you can still make up some fun activity ideas based off the Cat in the Hat books.
It was a really fun day and I only wish we were able to take more pictures of it! The memories will last forever though and that was what it was all about.
Over the next few years we started to find more Dr. Seuss things in the stores. When we were planning her party it was so hard to find decorations or even toys with this theme that we had to special order a few things! But after that we have found many things at the Dollar Tree, in the dollar sections, and at consignment stores. I hope to do another Cat-in-the-Hat themed birthday or party for some little ones soon. Here are some quick ideas that would make a party like this special!
In my recent excitement of making sensory bins, I have come across these Dr. Seuss themed sensory bins! They are so fun to make and would be perfect to keep little ones entertained at a party. You can also add playdough for kiddos to make a hat for the cat out of red and white playdough! I love this idea from fun-a-day.com.
There are many free coloring pages of the Cat in the Hat at kidsactivitiesblog.com:
Dollar Tree has these fun Dr. Seuss pencils. And thelibrarystore.com has the coolest book erasers and bookmarks. All of these are great as favors at a party or even a book club!

I’ve even found these flash cards at the Dollar Tree and love using them to teach letters, numbers, shapes, and colors.
Honestly, the amount of learning materials based around these Seuss characters gives you the opportunity to have an entire Suess-themed classroom or homeschool room. From posters to stickers, games to activity books, learning toys to learning journals, the ideas are everywhere! It is such a sweet idea and I know children will love it!
There are so many sticker books and teacher awards that are Dr. Seuss themed that are great to have in a classroom or just for your Seuss-loving children! Just keep an eye out at your local dollar store and teacher stores. These characters are so nostalgic and loved that you have a good chance of finding what you need. Also just as a helpful hint, I love shopping local homeschool consignment stores as well as pop up children’s consignment sales. I have been blessed with many cool finds that are perfect for birthdays and holidays.
We love our homeschool stores so much and were so happy to find a special Cat in the Hat themed grade-record book for my sister as she was starting school then.
Last but not least, March 2nd is Dr. Suess’s birthday and here is a link to a whole lot of fun activities for kids to do to celebrate and test their knowledge of all these wonderful books!
I hope you enjoy all these ideas! Let me know if you have ever done a Seuss-themed or Cat in the Hat themed party!
